At Gibson Dental, we love welcoming new families to our extended dental family! Quality oral care is essential for everyone in your family, and maintaining your child's oral health is as crucial for your son or daughter as it is for you.
The Most Common Chronic Childhood Illness
Did you know that cavities are the most common chronic childhood illness? Research shows that by age four, more than one in every four children has at least one cavity.
For the most part, cavities are caused by bacteria-filled plaque that lingers on teeth and ultimately causes tooth decay. However, some children are at higher risk for cavities, so it's crucial to have your son or daughter evaluated by your Madison, AL children's dentist.
We recommend that these important visits start within six months of the first baby tooth appearing, but no later than age one. It is important to make dental visits a consistent habit for everyone, but particularly for our children. There are specific issues that they may face that we need to handle promptly to avoid problems in the short term as well as in the future.
Why We Need to Protect Baby Teeth
The goal of dental visits starting at an early age is to give your child time to develop positive feelings about taking care of their teeth. These visits are purposefully low-key because the goal is to help your son or daughter can get used to us and the whole experience at their pace. We want to teach your child that dentistry isn't a chore and can be a fun and exciting adventure.
Also, maintaining consistency with six-month dental visits allows for appropriate preventative treatment to help avoid problems. By monitoring their oral health, we can address any issues as they arise and provide simple and conservative treatments. Baby teeth may be practice teeth, but that doesn't mean they don't have an important role to play!
Treatments That Protect Your Child's Teeth
Once your young child is receptive to us working in their mouth, we'll recommend dental exams and teeth cleanings every six months, just as we do for adults. In addition to helping protect your child's smile, look at these visits as an opportunity to ask our dentists and hygienists any questions you have, and to receive the reassurance you need.
- Fluoride – Acid naturally occurs in our mouths and can leach essential minerals from tooth enamel, which weakens them and increases your child's risk of cavities. Supplemental fluoride applications help counteract the mineral loss and strengthen your child's teeth.
- Dental sealants – Prevention is the name of the game, and placing dental sealants on your child's teeth creates a barrier that seals out bacteria. Sealants are a thin coating of plastic that we place on healthy teeth like molars that have rough, uneven surfaces and are prone to cavities. Dental sealants will continue to protect your child's teeth for several years until they gradually wear away on their own.
