Tooth sensitivity can have many causes, but it’s essential to contact your Madison, AL dentist if you suddenly develop this issue. Sensitivity can mean underlying cavities or early gum disease. In some cases, it even indicates an early tooth infection.

At your dental checkup, your dentist will look for underlying causes of your tooth sensitivity. If we don’t find the culprit, we may suggest a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth and help reduce or eliminate sensitivity.

A member of our team can also offer advice on caring for sensitive teeth at home, including:

  • Avoidance of hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Avoidance of acidic foods and drinks
  • Recommendations for a specialty toothpaste
  • Switching to a softer-bristled toothbrush
  • Rinsing with a mild mouthwash formulated for sensitive teeth
  • Stopping teeth whitening products temporarily

We want you to enjoy a healthy smile that is comfortable and functional. But, unfortunately, tooth sensitivity can get in the way of that!

What Dental Insurance Covers

Ultimately, insurance coverage is determined by your employer. Most insurance policies have a deductible that patients must meet before they start paying for services. Fortunately, this often doesn't apply to preventive services, which are usually covered at 100 percent. All dental insurance policies have an annual maximum, usually around $1,500, that they will pay out in benefits in a given year.

Insurance coverage for the most common dental procedures at our Madison, AL dental office—teeth cleanings, dental exams, x-rays, periodontal treatment, fillings, crowns, bridges, extractions, root canals—is pretty predictable. This is especially true of companies where we are a participating provider.

Some of the more specialized procedures, such as implants or orthodontics, are less predictable and consistent from one insurance company to the next. Our role as dentists is to recommend treatment that you need to maintain your oral health and to then come up with a plan that estimates your insurance coverage and any remaining out-of-pocket expense.

Because of all the variables at play, however, we want to be upfront and honest and tell you that it is not possible to be 100 percent accurate all of the time. But we do our best to get as accurate an estimate as possible of how much coverage you can expect.
