What can't you eat with braces?

If you are currently wearing or considering getting braces, congratulations! Braces will help transform your smile and greatly improve your oral health.

Braces effectively move your teeth into the correct position using a system of metal wires and brackets. Your orthodontist in Madison will periodically tighten the wires on your braces, and, as your teeth adapt and straighten out, they will repeat the process until your smile becomes aligned.

To keep your braces in tip-top shape, you will need to practice excellent oral hygiene throughout your treatment. Part of this dental care involves avoiding foods that could damage or even yank out your individual brackets and wires.

Generally, you’ll need to avoid foods that are overly sticky, hard, or crunchy. Common foods to avoid while wearing braces include:

  • Sticky candies, like taffy and caramel
  • Chewing gum
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Crunchy snacks like pretzels, chips, and crackers with sharp edges
  • Corn on the cob
  • Chewing on ice
  • Bagels
  • Hard, crunchy bread and bread with thick crusts
  • Marshmallows
  • Taco shells
  • Nut butter
  • Fudge

When choosing foods to enjoy with your braces, it’s best to be cautious and avoid anything that looks or feels like it could be dangerous to the metal components. If the food seems too sticky, stringy, hard, crunchy, or thick, choose a safer substitute instead.
